Miss Georgiou - Music Video Inspirations

Inspirations are essential to consider when going to create a music video production. This is as any idea which has been developed upon and been turned into a product always has a basic foundation behind there own idea, as everything is always loosely based upon someone else's idea. This way it allows for a more conventional piece of work, which can be developed upon by your own ideas to create a unique piece of work.

The first video I used to gather inspiration from was "Over" by Drake, where throughout the video the use of editing is admirable and used very efficiently. This is evident when the lyrics of the song are shown being present on screen while the performance takes place. The use of this micro-element I could use within my group and I's production through having writing on the screen before the song begins to play, at the very beginning of the music video, showing the artists name and the vevo logo. Although the artist Drake and this song doesn't belong to the indie genre, it relates towards the target and audience as through the use of this editing, it emphases the artists presence, and shows the artist as being extraordinary at the beginning of the video. Although, this shows the conventions within the music video as being clearer as the artist will be shown as being ordinary throughout the video itself; the use of the editing style providing with a clear contrast between the artist being shown as being both ordinary and extraordinary. Im going to use this inspiration in my storyboard during the opening slide, by adding in a "VEVO" label on the front of it.

The second video I shall mention which I have gained some form of inspiration from is "Come into my world" by Kylie Minogue. This inspiration is evident within the video where the artist can be seen coming on screen again after a loop of the location takes place; multiple forms of the artist being seen on screen. I have taken inspiration from this video not so much for the use of certain techniques throughout, but more so the idea behind the video, which is that it is heavily based around a concept, this being evident through the repeated visuals as mentioned previously. I will incorporate this into my own music video through having a concept center around the purpose of the video, which will be to show the struggles of getting into the music industry. Using this inspiration of having a concept being the main focus of the video is appealing for the target audience potentially for the intellectual appeal of being able to look past just the visuals and to see the deeper meaning behind them. This relates towards the genre as within the indie genre, a lot of the focus can often be drawn towards a concept behind the visuals, as it is often more appealing for a generally more mature audience which watch indie genre music videos. Im going to incorporate this inspiration into my storyboard by having a slide which relates just towards the connoted message of the video of the struggles of trying to make it into the music industry. These shots will be of the artist being ignored while busking in Liverpool street station, being ignored by those that walk past him.

The third video I shall look at is "Selfie", by the chain smokers. Although being unrelated to my genre which I'm going to create a video within, it is a good example of how a music video can follow the conventions of the genre which it falls into, but in doing so remaining to be unique and abstract. This is evident within the video as clear conventions of the dance genre can be seen with the club scene being evident, although this is done through having a montage edit of pictures relating towards the idea behind the music video, whereas while doing so having the genre conventional present. This allows for the video to be both unique yet conventional at the same time, all of this happening on screen at once. For my music video I have taken inspiration from this through intending upon editing the visuals of the video to be grainy and to have the saturation lowered, but not to the point of it being considered as being black and white, which is a common and generic indie convention. This will be appealing towards the target audience as it will allow for the visuals to be dark and grainy which will help towards the theme of the video/ concept, as well as the portrayal of the artist. They may find this appealing as it will still portray the artist as being a rather shallow and beaten down individual, creating sympathy and a relationship to be built between viewer and but by not following the generic convention of making the visuals full on black and white. This relates towards the indie genre as through including this convention, it does follow the convention yet makes it unique towards my groups video.

Another more direct inspiration which I gathered was from the music video of "Why'd you only call me when you're high" by the arctic monkeys. Within the music video, throughout the duration of it the artist can be seen wearing a full black outfit, with dark visuals and a everyday setting in the background. I used this as an inspiration and included this in my music production, through having our artist as having a full black attire. This is conventional of the indie genre, and will show how the artist belongs to the indie genre, making it clear to the viewer, and to also show how he is a unemotional person through the use of the dark plain colour, as well as emphasizing the fact that he is in a poor finical situation. This relates towards the target audience as they may find the portrayal of the artist appealing as they may sympathize with his situation, which might enable for a relationship to be built between the two. In regards to the genre this inspiration of the use of clothing is conventional to the genre as it is the type worn by many artists throughout the genre, and is what the viewer would expect to find an artist within the indie genre wearing. Im going to incorporate this inspiration into my storyboard during every shot where the artist is present. This is as during the entirety of our storyboard and music video, the artist will be wearing all black because of the common connotations and associations which come with the colour use.

The last inspiration I shall be discussing is another song by the band the arctic monkeys, this time being from the song "R U Mine". I have gathered two inspirations from this music video, one referring to the use of editing, and the next reffering to the use of cinematography, more specifically showing the perspective of the artist through a handheld camera. This is evident near the beggining of the music video, where the artist Alex Turner can be seen holding a handheld camera showing his face.  I will use this inspiration throughout my own music video to show my artist while he is travelling in the taxi, showing his face and facial expressions. This will be done to show the full extent of the artists facial expression, allowing for the artists face to be the center of the visuals, as well as being able to clearly show the artists displease on his face. Including this inspiration would be appealing for the target audience as they would get a clearer view towards the artists emotions on his face, which they may like as it might make them feel as if they are getting a better insight into the artist, as they are revealing a different and more personal side of them. This might enable for a relationship to be built as the audience may feel as if they have a more "personal" bond through the use of cinematography. In regards to the genre, this inspiration relates towards the genre as indie artists are often shown trying to get there face being the main center of attention with music videos, being present throughout a large number of videos as  it allows for them to get additional exposure as well as being able to connect towards an audience. Im going to incorporate this inspiration into my storyboard through having shots which focus solely on the artists face, which will be done during a number of points to enable the viewer to be able to connect on a deeper and more "personal". One specific example where this will be seen is just before the artist sets up to busk in Liverpool Street, as it will show his concerned and uneasy facial expression, which is appealing for the viewer as they may feel sympathy for our artist.

For the use of editing, this can be seen throughout the music video, as the visuals have been edited to have a black and white filter upon the visuals. I will use this inspiration within my own music video to edit all of the visuals to be darker and to have a generally more gritty feel. This is conventional to the indie genre, and will emphasis the artists struggles throughout the video, through having the edited gritty visuals and to add this general vibe towards the visuals of the video, to assist towards the negative portrayal of the artist which the viewer may be able to have sympathy for. This relates towards its appeal towards the target audience, as if they feel sympathy for our artist through the use of editing, it might enable for a relationship to be built between the viewer and the artist on screen. In regards to the genre, this inspiration relates towards the genre as editing the visuals within an indie music video to be darker is often present throughout a number of indie bands and artists videos, through doing so often helping towards creating a certain portrayal of the artist and other people present within the visuals. As this is a commonly used convention, it represents the genre as it will make it clear that our artist belongs to the indie genre. Im going to incorporate this inspiration into my storyboard and music video as the visuals which will be seen are rather dark and gritty, which will done to help towards creating a hopeless vibe for the artist and his situation.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding why music inspirations are essential to consider. You have identified a variety of points and have explained how the video has inspired you to create your music video, but you need to elaborate on the points that you have included, as to how you will construct your music video. This can be achieved, by considering the style and constructions of your product in further detail throughout.

    Aim-
    1) Elaborate on the ways in which you will use the inspiration within your own production, by considering your storyboards in further detail.
    2) Watch your language and use of swearing in your analysis
